Power of the Word While reading The Color Purple I was shocked by the development of Celieââ¬â¢s inner-self. Her entire being was defined by those around her. It appeared as if Celie had no hand in creating who she was. I could picture Shug, Mr., and Her father molding Celieââ¬â¢s body like a piece of clay until Celie truly believed she was an ugly, dumb, and worthless servant. It was shocking to see the destructive power of something as simple as words. Words seem to have the single handed ability to destroy life itself. The power of the word in The Color Purple particularly struck me because I was simultaneously reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. The Four Agreements is about the wisdom of the ancient Toltec. The Toltec is a way of thinking about life, and of filling ones life with happiness and love. According to Ruiz, the problem with most of us is that we have allowed the world around us to create our agreements for us. Our parents instilled beliefsââ¬âagreementsââ¬âinto us from the time we started trying to make sense of the world around us. And what we areââ¬âwho each of us is as an individual human beingââ¬âis determined by our agreements. Ultimately, who we are is defined by what we believe and our beliefs shape the world around us. In order to redefine ourselves the Toltec teaches that there are four agreements which we must learn to live by. The first and most important agreement is to be impeccable with your word. The word gives the power to create. The word creates the world around us and is therefore a tool of magic. However, as Ruiz says our word is a double-edged sword, and we can use it to create a beautiful dream, or we can use it to destroy everything around us. Misusing the word creates a living hell. Being impeccable with our word creates beauty, love, and heaven on earth. Ruiz continues to explain that the human mind is a fertile ground where opinions, ideas, and concepts are constantly being planted. Because the word is magic, humans are like magicians, and they are capable of casting spells. If the parents tell a child repeatedly that she is not very pretty, or that he is not very smart, the child will accept this as true. It will become an agreement in the mind of the child.

ANS: A strategy is an integrated overall concept and plan of how the organization will achieve its goals and objectives. According to Porter, business strategy has four components: Strategy involves more than operational effectiveness; Strategy rests on unique activities (Southwest Airlinesââ¬â¢activities focus on low-cost, convenient service); A sustainable strategic position requires trade-offs (Dollar General has low prices but lacks an inviting store atmosphere); and Fit drives both competitive advantage and sustainability.PTS: 1 DIF: M REF: pp. 123-125 NAT: AACSB: Reflective Thinking, Strategy 2. The breach of security prompted 25 percent of the companyââ¬â¢s clients to close their accoun ts. 1. What are policies and rules? 2. Could policies and rules have prevented this situation? Explain ANS: 1.Policies are general guidelines to follow when making decisions and taking action; they are plans. A rule is a specific course of action or conduct that must be followed; it is the simplest type of plan. Ideally, each rule fits a strategic plan. 2. Racism is bullying Essay
Do you want to be teased because of your cultural background, religion, accent or even your skin colour? The truth is Racism is happening everywhere everyday RASCISM IS BULLYING! According to the Macquarie dictionary, Racism has two important meanigs.1. Human races have special and different characteristics which determine their particular cultures, USA. Involving the idea that oneââ¬â¢s own race is better than any other race.2 offensive or even violent behaviour to members of any other race arising from such a belief. Bullying means frightening or ordering smaller or even weak people around. Racism can be seen in incidents of racist abuse, harassment indifference to cultural diversity, and discrimination. It will be good if racism disappears but the true fact is many people around would say mean and rude things about one another. It is unfortunate that people find a way to dislike others who are different from themselves. RASCISM IS BULLYING!!! people of all heritage backgrounds should be treated equally. There is no reason to put others down just because they are different. It is not fair to point out others just because yours arenââ¬â¢t obvious. If you have been teased look at them seriously and say would you liked to be called names or be made fun of? Simply just because you speak a different language or like to eat food of a different culture or like artjworks of a certain cultural style or simply because you have a different type of skin colour? No, you wouldnââ¬â¢t!!! RASCISM IS BULLYING! Why is it that in this day and age it is still ok to be racist? We the younger generation have the opportunity to stop racism and to accept everyone as equals. We the younger generation should come together and strive for equality. We should all be able to feel that we are accepted for who we are, and wherever we are. I donââ¬â¢t know the author of this beautiful poem but Iââ¬â¢d like to thank him or her for such a wonderful piece written and it goes like this: What if all the trees were oaks? How plain the world would seem; no maple syrup, banana splits, and how would orange juice would be? Wouldnââ¬â¢t it be a boring place, if all the people just one colour, just one language, just one family name! ~but~à if the forest were the world, and all the people were the trees; palm and pine, bamboo and willow, live and grow in Harmony. Arenââ¬â¢t you glad my goodà friend, different though we be; we are here to help each other, I learn from you, and you, from me!

Fuddy Meers Essay
They play was quite an interesting play with its use of comedy and tragedy. The actors did a terrific job on portraying the characters. The set was small so it was much easier to see their reactions. The introduction to the play was pretty unique with those people in tight pants and glitter all over everybody in the lobby. They never broke character no matter what went on in the lobby. Later they used as prompts on stage which was pretty interesting because at times I was so into the play I forgot they were there acting as a car or a door. Although Claire was the main character, the actor who played Millet had the best acting on stage. They way he switch between the two personality was amazing and hilarious. He portrayed the character really well and had me believing for a bit that he actually had a dual personality. His entrance on to the stage in every scene was perfect, every time he can on he was really enthusiastic and his enthusiasm did not fluctuate too much in the play, even though he was not playing one but two characters. The actress who played Claire portrayed the character well. From the beginning to the end she really captured the characters and her emotions. When she first entered on stage I was confused of what was going as she was walking aimlessly across the stage but later realized that was the whole point. She wanted the audience to believe she was confused and lost; and she did. I notice her break the fourth wall every now and then as she looked into the audience. I suppose it was part of the scrip to interact with the audience because she mostly did it when she was on the side doing random things with the people in tight pants. Her entrances where perfect every time, even though the scenes where being switched off between her and Richard in the car, she never seen to loose focus. You could clearly see every expression on her face which made it more realistic to the audience. The actor who played Richard could have done a better job on portraying his character. He wasnââ¬â¢t terrible it just looked like he was trying to hard; it just didnââ¬â¢t seem as natural. For example in the scene he gets pulled over by the lady cop, he was a little too jittery; no one really acts like that. Overall he did pretty decent job but could have done much better. The limping man, who was Zack than later we found out he was Claire ex husband, did an amazing job portraying his character. It wasnââ¬â¢t only his facial deformation, which I have to admit looked pretty real to me, but was the way he acted out the character, from the lisp to the scary deep voice, that made him truly incredible. He made the audience believe he was really deformed. The scene when he first took Claire and he was struggle to enter the window was pretty hilarious but he also gave an insight to what he character was going through. They endowed many things on the set, most of the things looked pretty realistic. In the scene when Richard and his son go looking for Claire they used a paper joint to endow the marijuana they were smoking but they did not portray being under the influence as well as they could have. Usually people that smoke pot are really laid back and giggly with short term memory loss not knowing what their doing half the time. They also endowed the officerââ¬â¢s gun which still look pretty real. When Claire was running up and down the stage with that knife it seem pretty dangerous but from where I was sitting I couldnââ¬â¢t even tell if it was real or fake. The overall play was excellent and it gave me an opportunity to learn from these actors what to do and not to do. They really had some tremendous actors on this set who did an amazing job on convincing the audience on what was going on in the play.

Cause and Effect Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Cause and Effect - Essay Example Global warming is the rise in earth temperature mainly due to its inhabitants and their activities. On average 7 billion tons of carbon di-oxide is emitted into atmosphere by various activities. It not only threatens human beings, but also animals and fertile land. Gases like carbon dioxide, methane are main contributors to this nuisance(Ham et al.,1993) Most of the sunlight is reflected back from earth, but the presence of these unwanted gases prevents its flow back to outer space and consequently re-reflected on to the earth. Use of chemicals and dumping of industrial waste into the sea are the main factors to this evil cause This rise in temperature causes melting of polar ice caps, rise in sea levels, floods, killer storms, droughts, extinction of species. Coral reefs are at a direct threat from global warming, various skin diseases and cancers are gifts of global warming Bibliography : Ham, J , L H. J. M. Janssen, and R J. Swart. Non-co? Advertising and Branding Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Advertising and Branding - Essay Example In Britain, the opposition of advertisements to the law has been related to their negative effects on health; in this context, advertisements that promote tobacco or unhealthy eating habits have been set under investigation (Lancaster and Lancaster 2003, Harrison and Cantor 1997, in Hargrave and Livingstone 215, 216). The process through which the content of advertisements in Britain is checked is clearly described in the relevant laws ââ¬â including the rules of the Advertising Standards Authority, the authority that holds the responsibility for the alignment of advertisements with the law. It should be noted that the specific process is not related to particular political trends or beliefs; rather, it operates independently; this view is verified by the fact that the relevant efforts have been supported ââ¬â since their first appearance in Britain - by the Labour and the Conservatives (Paulu 69); no differentiation has been identified in the willingness of the above parties to control the violation by advertisements of the local laws. In order to understand the process through which advertisements in UK are controlled for their content, it would be necessary to refer primarily to the laws used for the regulation of the particular activity. At a first level, it should be made clear that the opposition of the content of advertisements to the existing laws is considered as a violation of the relevant laws; this is a rule applicable on all advertisements ââ¬â no matter if they are published in Britain or in the EU territory. In the last case, however, there is a power of the appropriate European authorities ââ¬â referring to the European Standards Advertising Alliance ââ¬â to intervene (Chissick and Kelman 246). This perspective needs to be mentioned in this paper, since Britain is a member of the European Union. Moreover, it should be made clear that in the context of European Union territory the content of advertisements is controlled using the ââ¬ËInternational Chamber of Commerceââ¬â¢s Code of Advertising Practiceââ¬â¢ (Chissick and Kelman 246). This means that in Britain also, the potential use of the above legislative text cannot be rejected; however, the local laws regulating Advertising should be primarily used ââ¬â reference would be made to the above legislative framework if the judges of the national courts consider such initiative as necessary. On the other hand, in a relevant report of the House of Lords it is noted that the European legal framework related to Advertising is not of particular value for the British market, since the national law on the specific field address all aspects of the specific activity, i.e. there are no gaps to be filled by the European legislation (Parliament, House of Lords 157). However, the above laws (European laws on Advertising) would be particularly valuable in the case of advertising developed in the context of electronic commerce ââ¬â which is not limited in terms of boundaries. As for the British legal framework in regard to advertising, this is mainly consisted by the Advertising Codes ââ¬â the ââ¬ËUK Code of Broadcast Advertising and the UK Code of Non-Broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketingââ¬â¢ (ASA organization, website, Advertising Codes). It should be noted that the ââ¬Ë Committee of Advertising Practice and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practiceââ¬â¢ (ASA organization, website, Advertising Codes) have the responsibility for the development and the monitoring of the above Codes. The complaints related to the content of advertisements in Britain are investigated following a specific process ââ¬â as set in the laws mentioned above. The Advertising
